Description
A closeup macro photograph of a cute southern ring neck snake also known as ringed-neck snakes. They are shy and nocturnal but easy to find hiding under large rocks or fallen trees. This small snake you see sitting on my hand is a full grown adult. They are colorful with a shiny gun metal gray color on top a dark head, bright orange ring around the neck, with black eyes and a bright orange spotted underbelly. One defensive trick they have when threatened by predators is to flip upside down showing the bright color of their underside as a warning that they are poisonous or bitter tasting. I don't think they really are poisonous but I never tried to eat one either. This cute little one was kind enough to let me get this cool photo of him before I released him back into the wild to finish living his life.
