Description
The month of May is the most active time in Oklahoma for severe weather. On May 29th 2012 this is the sight I saw in the sky just north of where we lived out in the country. I am not as terrified by tornadoes as some people around here are but I do have a healthy respect for them having seen the damage from three of the biggest storms on record and being narrowly missed by them. Still there is a storm chasers heart in me that causes an awestruck fascination with extreme phenomenon like mesocyclones.
The storm you see here is a giant rotating super cell with an amazing dark lowering bell cloud, also known as a wall cloud. I stood outside with my camera taking pictures of it as it moved through the area just before sundown wondering if it was ever going to get organized enough to drop a funnel.
The winds on the west side of it were very strong and kicked up a dirt cloud that finally ruined my visibility but out of all the shots I got that day this one was the best for making art with.
After traveling another 70 miles east of us this storm finally did put down a big wedge funnel close to the small town of Ada but fortunately for all involved, it stayed out in the open countryside and only damaged a few barns and outbuildings. Storms like this one are most ominous and dangerous when they happen after dark.
