Description
A field guide reference style macro photograph I took on my 10 acre plot in central Oklahoma of an assasin bug on a rudbeckia wildflower. The plant is also known as black eyed susan and the insect is also known as a wheel bug or kissing bug. They are predatory and do a fair job of pollenating the flowers too as they stalk or lie in wait for their unsuspecting prey. This guy was waiting for ants to come up from the stem and underside of the yellow petals of the blossom. This is also a flying insect and if you look closely you will see the dark wings folded over his body while he is not in flight. Some people fear this bug because they can bite when provoked, but I have dealt with them many times and they have never acted aggressive to me in any way. They seem pretty easy going and I think it must take something pretty drastic to provoke them to sting a human.
