Description
The Battle of Lookout Mountain was fought November 24, 1863, as part of the Chattanooga Campaign of the American Civil War. Union forces assaulted Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga, Tennessee, and defeated Confederate forces. Lookout Mountain was one engagement in the Chattanooga battles. It drove in the Confederate left flank and allowed some of the Union men to assist in the Battle of Missionary Ridge the following day, which routed the confederate army, lifting the siege of Union forces in Chattanooga, and opening the gateway into the Deep South.
Casualties for the Battle of Lookout Mountain were relatively light by the standards of the Civil War and it has come to be known as the "Battle Above the Clouds" because it was a foggy day when it took place.
Portions of the Lookout Mountain battlefield are preserved by the National Park Service as part of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park.
I have a personal interest in this battle because I used to live in Chattanooga on Missionary ridge in the suburb known as East Ridge. Across the street from my house was a public park and people with metal detectors used to comb the ground there looking for musket balls and other war trinkets. We even had them in our yard once.
