Description
The battle of Chickamauga was fought for two days in September of 1863, the 18th through the 20th. It was the first battle fought in the state of Georgia and the most significant union defeat in the western war theater with the second highest number of casualties after Gettysburg. It was named for the small creek that it was fought beside, the Chickamauga creek in northwest Georgia and it was said that the name was a Cherokee word meaning "river of death" because the Cherokees contracted smallpox there. But the terrible battle certainly made the title gel.
Much of the central Chickamauga battlefield is preserved by the National Park Service as part of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. The Civil War Trust, its members and partners have saved 141 acres of the battlefield through 2017. {Wikipedia}
