Artist's Description
This lovely wildflower that looks like a sweetpea is known as the common vetch and truly is common on my 10 acre plot here in central Oklahoma. They are a deep rosy pink with sensitive leaves that fold up at the slightest touch curly tendrils that are very adept at climbing and the cutest little pods for the seeds. A member of the bean family, they are small and grow low to the ground unless they have something to climb. Most people around these parts overlook them as a weed and never come to appreciate their delicate beauty which conceals just how hardy they really are. They have been used as fodder for livestock and a cover crop in agriculture to fix nitrogen into the soil.
